Glitter ombre coffin gel manicure in pink, silver and rose at L2 Nail Salon Mountain View

— Why clients pick us

Gel-only,
on purpose.

Most Mountain View nail salons offer gel as one option on a longer menu. We took the opposite approach — gel-only, no acrylic / dip / shellac. Here's why, and what else we do differently.

01

Gel only — not gel-friendly, gel only

Most 'gel-friendly' salons still offer acrylic, dip and shellac alongside gel. We don't carry them. Acrylic monomer fumes affect studio air quality and technician lung health long-term, and dip powder shares acrylic's lifting / yellowing issues. Gel does everything they do — without the fumes, the smell or the nail damage.

02

Six-tier menu, occasion-priced

From a clean $35 Regular polish to a $100 Luxury Cat-Eye finish. Six clear price points so you can match the service to the occasion, not the other way around. Most weekly clients live in the $60 Basic Gel; $80-$100 tiers are for events.

03

Hard / Builder Gel — acrylic strength, no fumes

The +$20 Hard Gel add-on overlays a reinforced gel layer for fragile or peeling nails. Holds up to typing, sports and toddlers the way acrylic does — without the chemical exposure. Best Gel-only system for clients recovering from years of acrylic.

04

Master technicians, internationally certified

Winnie holds JNA + JNEC certifications from Japan with 10 years experience; Karly is US + China certified at 8 years. Vicky, Amber and Heather lead the senior tier at 2-4 years specializing in modern minimalist, chrome and mirror French. Real credentials, not a quick course.

05

Cat-Eye magnetic gel — single-coat statement

Real magnetic gel polish, not glitter — microscopic flakes pulled into a luminous cat's-eye shimmer by a magnet before curing. Shifts with the light. Most Mountain View nail shops don't carry the magnetic line; we have both Basic and Luxury Cat-Eye on the menu.

06

Healthy-nail focus for acrylic recovery

We see clients every week who arrive with paper-thin, ridged or peeling nails after years of acrylic. The combination of gel-only chemistry, Hard Gel reinforcement and conservative shaping technique gets them back to healthy in 2-3 visits. We've built a reputation for this specifically.

— Inside the chair

What a Basic Gel
actually involves.

Most lifting / chipping problems trace back to two prep steps salons skip. Here's the full sequence so you know what to expect — and what to push back on if you see it missing somewhere else.

  1. Min 0-10

    Soak, shape, cuticle care

Warm hand soak softens the cuticle and lifts surface buildup. Nails are shaped to your requested silhouette — square, almond, oval, coffin, squoval. Cuticles pushed back gently, never cut aggressively.

  2. Min 10-20

    Surface prep + base coat

Buffed lightly to give the gel something to bond to. Dehydrator and base coat applied — most lifting / chipping issues come from a salon that skips this step.

  3. Min 20-40

    Two gel polish coats

Color applied in thin even coats, cured under LED. Two coats give true color depth without bulk. Cat-Eye finish uses a magnet between cure stages to pull the magnetic flakes into the signature shimmer.

  4. Min 40-50

    Top coat + finish

High-gloss top coat sealed and cured. Cuticle oil massaged in, hand massage if you're on the Supreme or Luxury tier. Final shape check, photos if you want them.

— Five fatal mistakes

Why a manicure
chips in a week.

  • 01

Aggressive drill / file before application

Some salons drill or heavily file natural nails to 'help adhesion' — the real reason gel doesn't stick is improper prep or expired product. We file the surface only enough to break shine, never to thin the nail plate.

  • 02

Off-brand or expired UV / LED lamps

Underpowered or older lamps under-cure gel — the polish looks dry but isn't fully bonded. Comes off in chips within a week. We replace lamp bulbs on schedule and run only manufacturer-certified curing units.

  • 03

    Skipping dehydrator / primer

If natural nails aren't dehydrated before base coat, residual oils cause immediate lifting at the cuticle within 5-7 days. This is a 30-second step too many shops skip to save time.

  • 04

    Up-selling acrylic over gel

Many salons make better margin on acrylic and steer customers toward it. We've made the call once and for all — gel does everything acrylic does for healthy-nail clients. Hard / Builder Gel covers the strength gap for fragile nails.

  • 05

No nail-health check before adding products

If your natural nail is peeling, infected or showing fungal patterns, the right move is treatment first, not another layer. We assess at intake. If we see something concerning, we'll send you to a dermatologist before doing the service.

— Gel myths

What people
get wrong.

Myth

"Gel manicures damage your nails."

What's actually true

Only when removed wrong. Peeling gel off (instead of proper soak-off removal) takes natural nail layers with it — that's where the damage comes from, not the gel itself. Done properly, gel-only with periodic Hard Gel reinforcement actually helps weak nails grow stronger.

Myth

"Gel doesn't last as long as acrylic."

What's actually true

A Basic Gel Mani lasts 2-3 weeks; a full Gel-X set lasts 3-4 weeks — same as acrylic. The 'gel chips faster' reputation comes from at-home gel kits with weak lamps, not professional salon application.

Myth

"Cat-eye is just glittery polish."

What's actually true

Completely different chemistry. Real magnetic gel polish contains microscopic iron-oxide flakes; running a magnet over the wet polish before curing locks the flakes into a 3D shimmer pattern. The effect shifts with the light angle — glitter polish doesn't do that.

Myth

"All gel polish is the same."

What's actually true

Professional lines (OPI Pro, Aprés, Light Elegance) use different polymer chemistry than the $15 Amazon kits. The difference shows up at week two — pro gel still looks fresh, kit gel has yellowed and started lifting.

Myth

"Dip powder is the same as gel."

What's actually true

Different category. Dip powder is acrylic powder bonded with resin — shares acrylic's lifting and yellowing problems, just without the strong fumes during application. We don't carry it.

— Real questions

What people
actually ask.

Coming-off-acrylic recovery, French timing, bridal scheduling, pregnancy, nail biting, chip repair, minimalist asks, BYO polish — pulled from real intake conversations.

I'm coming off years of acrylic — how long should I wait before gel? +

You don't have to wait. Many clients book a gel manicure the same day they have acrylic removed (we do removal in-house, $0 for returning clients, $10 if done at another salon). The Hard / Builder Gel add-on (+$20) is the move for the first 2-3 sets — it reinforces thin, post-acrylic nail plates while the underlying nail regrows.

I want a French manicure. What tier should I pick? +

Modern micro-French is priced as a $6-12 per nail design add-on to any tier. Basic Gel Mani + micro-French on all 10 nails = $60 + $60-$120 design. Traditional French (full white tip) is included in the Supreme tier and up. Tell us at booking which look you're after.

I'm getting married — what's the bridal experience? +

Book the Luxury Gel Mani ($100) for the spa hand ritual — paraffin, extended massage, careful French or chrome finish. We recommend booking a trial run 2-3 weeks before the wedding to lock in shape, color and design. Wedding-day timing: 90 minutes minimum, more if you want hand-painted detail. Call (650) 386-6904 to coordinate with your wedding-week schedule.

I work with my hands (medical, food service, lab). Will gel last? +

Gel actually outperforms regular polish for hands-on jobs because the cure is harder and more chip-resistant. Add Hard Gel reinforcement for high-impact jobs (nursing, dental hygiene, kitchen). Frequent hand-washing and sanitizer use shortens any manicure's life — gel handles it 2-3x better than regular polish.

My nails are weak and peeling. Should I get Hard Gel or Gel-X? +

Hard / Builder Gel (+$20 add-on to any tier) is the right move for weak natural nails that need reinforcement at their current length. Gel-X (the Aprés full set, +$30) is for adding length on top — pre-formed soft-gel tips that bond to your natural nail. If your nails are too short to file, Gel-X. If they're long enough but bend or peel, Hard Gel.

Are gel manicures safe during pregnancy? +

Yes. The actives in pro gel polish stay sealed inside the cured coat; no fumes during application (unlike acrylic), no chemicals reach your bloodstream. The only practical concern is ventilation and sitting upright — both fine at our chair. We've done gel manis for many clients through their full pregnancy.

I bite my nails / can't stop picking. Can you help? +

Yes — nail biting and picking is one of the patterns Winnie and Karly specialize in correcting. The combination of a gel coat (creates physical resistance to biting), proper shape (no rough edges to pick at) and the visible cost of damage usually breaks the habit within 2-3 sets. Add Hard Gel for extra resistance.

What's the visual difference between Gel-X and acrylic? +

Aprés Gel-X uses pre-formed soft-gel tips that are thinner, more flexible and have a more natural arch than sculpted acrylic. The tip blends into the natural nail without the bulky 'apex' acrylic creates. Side profile is the easy tell — Gel-X looks like your nails are just longer; acrylic looks like a stuck-on tip.

I chipped a nail two days after my appointment. Will you fix it? +

Yes, no charge if within 7 days of a Basic / Supreme / Luxury Gel Mani. Past 7 days it's $5 / nail for the Nail Repair add-on. Bring the original gel color in mind if you remember it — we can usually match from our stock. Same-day walk-ins for repair are usually fine; just call ahead.

I want minimalist nails — what should I ask for? +

Modern minimalist is exactly Vicky and Amber's specialty. Ask for 'milky white with clean shape' or 'sheer pink, oval' or 'glossy clear, micro-French' — these are our most-requested looks for the Mountain View work crowd. Tier-wise, Basic Gel Mani is enough; no design add-on needed unless you want a single accent nail.

Can I bring my own polish from home? +

Generally no — at-home polish bottles vary in viscosity and cure compatibility with our LED lamps. We carry over 100 colors across professional lines (OPI Pro, Aprés, Light Elegance, plus seasonal). If you've spotted a color elsewhere, send us a photo before your appointment and we'll usually have a match.

Do you do nail art for events / parties? +

Yes — Winnie (10 yrs, JNA / JNEC certified) does competition-level hand-painted art. Cartoon characters, florals, chrome and gold leaf, 3D elements. Pricing follows the hand-painted scale — $2-5 / nail for simple, $6-12 / nail for moderate, $12-20 / nail for consult-level custom work. Book her specifically and bring photos.
