Japanese-style scalp ritual in progress at Pure Hair Spa Mountain View

— Why clients pick us

Scalp-first since
2021.

"Japanese head spa" went viral in 2024-25 and every salon in the Bay Area suddenly added it to the menu. Here's what actually separates a real Japanese-style ritual from a $30 upsell on a haircut.

01

Bay Area's first dedicated scalp center

Founded in 2021, Pure Hair Spa was built around the scalp-first model from day one — not retrofitted from a general hair salon. The entire studio flow, room layout and product stack is engineered for scalp work, not added as a side menu.

02

Microscope scalp analysis at intake

Every session begins with a microscope-grade scalp check — flake type, sebum balance, follicle density, inflammation markers. This is standard practice in Tokyo head-spa rooms and rare among US chains. The cleanse and treatment strategy is built on what we actually see, not a one-size-fits-all flow.

03

Prescription-grade brands only

Kérastase Specifique, Milbon, Leonor Greyl, Oribe, René Furterer — the same professional lines used by the Tokyo head spas we benchmark against. We don't carry retail-shelf shampoo; everything in the cabinet requires a salon license to source.

04

LED red infrared therapy

Our 90-minute Anti-Aging & Hair Growth ritual includes LED red infrared light therapy for follicle activation — a step still rare outside dermatology clinics. Stimulates microcirculation and supports the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle.

05

Master scalp therapists, monthly retrained

Weiwei, Amanda and the team train monthly on Japanese-style massage flow, scalp-condition assessment and new treatment protocols. Every chair is a single-client treatment room — never rushed, no shared station.

06

Honest session packages

Pre-paid 3-, 5- and 10-session packages with published per-session math. New clients get an intro-priced first visit ($99 / $139 / $219 across the 60 / 75 / 90-min tiers). No hidden add-ons at checkout.

— Inside the ritual

What 60 minutes
actually looks like.

Minute-by-minute breakdown of the Basic Cleanse. The 75- and 90-minute tiers follow the same flow with deeper treatments and an LED red infrared phase added.

  1. Min 0-5

    Microscope scalp analysis

Quick consultation on concerns (oiliness, flake, shedding, scalp irritation). Microscope check assesses the actual scalp state before the cleanse strategy is locked in.

  2. Min 5-20

    Two-stage customized cleanse

First clarifying cleanse lifts surface buildup. Second targeted cleanse uses the prescription-grade line matched to your scalp state — different formulas for oily, dry, sensitive, dandruff-prone.

  3. Min 20-45

    Long scalp + shoulder massage

The signature step. 20-25 minutes of measured Japanese-style massage — pressure points, lymph mobilization, scalp microcirculation. Most clients fall asleep here.

  4. Min 45-55

    Treatment serum / mask

Conditioning mask or treatment serum matched to your scalp + hair needs. Left on while the warm towel works through.

  5. Min 55-60

    Hand-finished blow-dry

Professional blow-dry with a Dyson tool to seal cuticles and finish clean. Scalp stays breathable, hair sets soft.

— Five fatal mistakes

Why most "head spa"
isn't actually head spa.

  • 01

Treating scalp work like a glorified shampoo

Most US salons add 'head spa' as a $30 upsell to a regular cut. No analysis, no targeted treatment, no long massage. Just a deeper rinse. That's not what Tokyo means by head spa.

  • 02

Retail-shelf products on a professional menu

If the cleanser comes from the same brand line you can buy on Amazon, you're not getting professional-grade actives. Salon-exclusive lines have different concentrations and ingredient stacks.

  • 03

    Skipping scalp analysis entirely

An oily scalp and a dry-flake scalp need opposite cleanses. Same product on both makes one worse. We've had clients come in with months of OTC-induced dryness because their salon never checked.

  • 04

    Rushing the massage

The massage isn't filler — it's the lymph and circulation work that actually moves the needle on scalp health. 5 minutes of head rub is not the same as 20 minutes of structured Japanese pressure-point flow.

  • 05

    No cadence recommendation at checkout

Scalp work is cumulative — 4-6 sessions to reset, then monthly maintenance. A salon that doesn't talk to you about cadence is selling you a one-off, not a result.

— Scalp myths

What people
get wrong.

Myth

"It's just an expensive shampoo session."

What's actually true

A regular shampoo cleans the hair shaft. A Japanese head spa works on the scalp skin itself — the microbiome, the follicles, the lymph drainage underneath. It's closer to a dermatology session than a wash-and-blow.

Myth

"I don't have scalp problems, so I don't need it."

What's actually true

Daily buildup from dry shampoo, styling product and natural sebum quietly suffocates follicles long before flakes or thinning show up. Preventative scalp work is what keeps the visible problems from arriving.

Myth

"One session is enough."

What's actually true

The first visit is a reset — visible difference in scalp feel and hair body within 24 hours. The compounding result (texture, growth, density) shows around session 4-6. Our 5-Session Package exists for this reason.

Myth

"Hotter water cleans better."

What's actually true

Tepid-warm water is correct — hot water strips the lipid barrier, which is exactly what you want to preserve on a sensitive scalp. Tokyo head spas use precisely temperature-controlled rinses.

Myth

"Massage is the same as the chair massage at the spa next door."

What's actually true

Japanese-style scalp massage uses specific pressure points, lymph drainage technique and microcirculation work. It's a trained protocol, not freeform rubbing.

— Real questions

What people
actually ask.

Pulled from intake conversations — hair loss versus this, dye and extensions, sensitive scalps, curly hair, and the cadence question everyone asks at checkout.

I have thinning hair / hair loss — is this different from Rogaine or a hair-loss clinic? +

Different layer. Rogaine (minoxidil) is a topical drug that activates follicles chemically; hair-loss clinics handle PRP injections and prescription medication. A Japanese head spa works on the scalp environment — circulation, microbiome, buildup, inflammation — that all of those clinical treatments need to succeed in. Many of our 90-minute clients run scalp work in parallel with their dermatologist's protocol, not instead of it.

I dye my hair. Will the cleanse strip my color? +

No — we use professional color-safe lines (Kérastase, Milbon) that are formulated to lift buildup without lifting dye. We do recommend scheduling the head spa at least 72 hours after a color appointment so the cuticle has time to seal.

Can I do this if I have extensions, a weave or a system? +

Yes, with technique adjustments. We can work around tape-in extensions, sew-ins, micro-link extensions and hair systems without disturbing the bond. Tell us at booking so we plan the cleanse and massage path. We don't recommend the 90-minute ritual under a sew-in since access to the scalp is limited.

I have sensitive scalp / eczema / psoriasis. Is it safe? +

We see clients with seborrheic dermatitis and mild psoriasis routinely. If you're currently using a prescription topical (clobetasol, ketoconazole), bring the bottle so we can match cleanse strategy. We won't treat active broken skin — wait until the flare calms.

How is this different from the 'head spa' at my regular hair salon? +

Three things. (1) We're scalp-only — our therapists train specifically on scalp protocols, not as one service among twenty. (2) Microscope analysis at intake — most salons skip this entirely. (3) Length and depth — a typical salon head spa is 20-30 minutes appended to a haircut. Ours is 60-90 minutes of standalone work.

Will my hair look strange right after the appointment? +

The opposite — most clients say their hair has more body and shine immediately. The deep cleanse removes the buildup that flattens roots. We finish with a professional blow-dry, so you walk out done, not damp.

I have curly / low-porosity / 4C hair — is this for me? +

Especially yes. Low-porosity hair retains buildup more than other types, and curly textures often hide scalp dryness underneath the volume. We adjust massage technique to avoid friction-induced frizz and use moisture-prioritized treatment lines.

Should I wash my hair before the appointment? +

No — come in with your normal between-wash hair. The therapist needs to see the scalp at baseline, oil and all. We do the cleansing.

How do I know if it's actually working? +

Three signals. (1) Scalp feel right after the session — lighter, less itchy, breathable. (2) Hair body the next morning — roots lift visibly. (3) Cumulative — at session 4 the scalp itself starts looking different under the microscope check we do at every visit.

Can I book a couples or shared session? +

Yes — we have two scalp suites that can run in parallel. Let us know at booking and we'll align the timing. Currently the most popular combo is the 75-minute Anti-Dandruff for one partner + 90-minute Anti-Aging for the other, finishing within a few minutes of each other.
